Half Past Dead 2

What’s weird for me is that it’s not a bad sequel for a movie that totally does not deserve a sequel.

When Half Past Dead first came out it was supposed to be the action film of the time, but instead it was Steven Seagal’s last hooray (as a theatrical draw). It was going to launch Ja Rule’s movie career (not sure if anyone actually thought that), but that did not happen. This movie did nothing but sink into obscurity.

Or so I thought, because here is Half Past Dead 2, which I would have never expected. It’s an actually a genuine sequel as the film stars Kurupt as a character named Twitch whose subplot involves a major plot from the original movie.

While Twitch connects both movies the main plot revolves around a new character named Burke played by Bill Goldberg, in a movie to play off of Goldberg’s star power.

That makes sense, but what still does not make sense is why they called it Half Past Dead 2. Maybe Half Past Dead made more money than I thought. I mean despite how crappy that Steven Seagal movie was it was still a Steven Seagal movie, released at the tail end of his peak popularity (Not really, right? I think On Deadly Ground was that movie).

I would put money that Half Past Dead 2 being Straight-to-Video could not afford to bring Seagal or Ja Rule back and Kurupt came at a fraction of the cost. As well as Bill Goldberg who I would argue was as big of a straight-to-video draw as Seagal when this film was release but still cost less money.

The only thing I can really say about Half Past Dead 2 is that if you like Half Past Dead as a movie more over the fact that it’s a Steven Seagal movie than you’ll be good with Half Past Dead 2 which is as good as its original.
