Belly

Belly is one of those movies that works with the narration.

given that it’s the first film by iconic video director, Hype Williams, I only expected Belly to be a series of music videos put together with a weak narrative to justify it, and that’s what I got.

Hype Williams is a brilliant director and this “music video” was beautifully shot and every shot looked great. As far as the story goes it would have been lamer if he actually used real actors. it was very authentic using Nas and DMX, particularly X who was hot off the streets during the time.

Belly works as an artistic metaphor for life in the hood, but unlike most movies like this, the main characters got the silver lining, and it was outright believable.

All that said it needs a narration to keep the glue together, so it’s not done to be lazy which makes it good and that’s rare.
