Evilspeak

Evilspeak!? sounds like Italian to me (or maybe Latino, I don’t know Italian well enough to know the difference).

So my favorite part of the film is that  it has Haywood Nelson in it, best known for playing Dwayne nelson on the TV show What’s happening, that was cool.

But this is the Clint Howard show in possibly his first and only leading role, which was perfectly adjusted for him. Clint who looks really young in this (With his hair and all) is perfect as Stanley Coopersmith a geeky orphan going to a military school that no one wants him at, which ex plans why he got into some demonic shit.

I’m sure the Evilspeak had something to actually do with the computer Stanley was using to interpret an evil book that was used in the beginning of the film to sacrifice a naked virgin. Well this evil commuter gets Stanley to stand up for himself in the “I need human blood” type of way.

An interesting twist in a horror film made in the golden age of slasher films of the early 80s especially  is that the cast was made up of mostly male teens living at a military college, which the film gives us a shower scene that features Clint bearing his ass. No disrepute to Ron Howard’s little brother, but when women were looking for equality in their horror films I don’t think they had Clint Howard in mind. someone got jipped (especially sense the film opens with naked breast and the during the  film we get a more traditional slasher shower scene).

The interesting twist of the film was not done well. I get that in 81 the computer was not a household thing, but they really needed to get someone on the film set who knew a little more about them. Just that they can be more of it. Evilspeak’s concept of a demonic computer was just very weak.

I’ll give Clint Howard his props, as he played Stanley well. You feel for the character as being an outcast who turns to the lord thy Satan when the world turns on him. Clint was all too believable with it, and that’s what makes the movie work while they drop the ball on the missed concept, the not really that scary chanting music, but I’ll give the movie some props on those cooky 80s special effects. Not the best but that’s what makes the movie so much fun.

Evilspeak is a movie about being bulled foremost and then becomes a pretty bad ass slasher film in the last 30mins despite the week premise. Not bad at all.
