Victoria (14 out of 1,001)

Victoria was one of those movies I saw a long time ago and really like but I did not think twice about after seeing it.

There are some amazing camera shots going on in the film, but I feel the movie really does suffer form the need to do something in it.

It starts out a very mumblecore styled story. If your not familiar with the film genre (Which movies like Francis Ha (Which  totally should have made the list of movies to see before  you die) are a part of), basically, the genre is all about making an interesting film about the most mundane things.

For example, Victoria is about a girl from Madrid, living in Berlin who comes out of a club and is about to go home when she befriends a group of young men just hanging out and is persuaded to hang out with them for a while. This in itself, combined with the impressive one take shoot the film is doing could have been enough, but the film takes it to another level.

Coming out in the summer of 2015 when movies like the Avengers: Age of Ultron was gentrifying theaters, you could say that this was a great alternative to the blockbuster boom, but in reality, where the movie eventually takes you seems like an attempt to be a blockbuster.

Similar to Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) when it comes to the camera angels. The performances of the actors in the film are great as well. It really helps that everyone seems to have the right chemistry. I also like the fact that the movie is in English and in German, but they don’t use any subtitles knowing that the visual element is strong enough for everyone to know what’s happening. I love movies confident enough in it’s visual story telling to do something like that.

Overall, I would totally see this before you die.
